What importers should verify on bumpers
Bumper plate verification is a finished-goods check of outer diameter, hub/insert size, and rated mass against the written sheet. It is not a drop-test certificate. Importers ask for it because a plate that “looks like a bumper” can still be thin, light, or tight on the sleeve.
Yunlingyu quotes color rubber bumper plates as export SKUs. Write the diameter you need (often 450 mm for competition-style loading) and the bumper plate weights as separate lines. Weights bumper plates in a mixed carton still need those two lines per rating.
Where diameter and mass get mixed
A factory may hold mass by pouring less rubber. The plate then sits inside a weight band and fails a diameter gauge. The reverse also happens: diameter is held and mass runs heavy. If your RFQ says only “bumper 20 kg,” receiving has no rule for either field.
Color coding is a third field. A miscolored 15 kg plate in a 20 kg slot is a gym error waiting to happen. It is not proved by a scale.
Fields that belong on the spec sheet
| Field | Ask | Typical fail |
|---|---|---|
| Outer diameter | mm, measured at the rubber OD, tool named | Thin “training bumper” sold as 450 mm |
| Rated mass | kg or lb mark; percent or gram band; dry weigh | Light core or short rubber pour |
| Insert / hole | Olympic sleeve fit; burrs; insert height | Tight on a 50 mm sleeve or insert walk |
| Thickness / stack | If the gym will stack many plates | Collar will not fit the load |
| Color vs rating | Color chart on the PI | Wrong color in a matched set |
Competition-style 450 mm is a buyer choice. Many commercial gyms accept a smaller OD if the sheet says so and the bar still loads. The fail is selling a smaller OD as 450 mm without a measurement.
A check you can run on samples
- Measure OD in two directions. Record both. Photograph the tape or caliper against the plate edge.
- Weigh dry on a scale that can resolve the mass band.
- Slide the plate onto a known 50 mm sleeve or a go/no-go hub. Note drag or rock.
- Compare color to the PI chart, not to a memory of IWF colors unless you ordered that chart.
- Repeat on the lightest and heaviest rating on the PO. Do not let 5 kg represent 25 kg thickness.
If diameter is out and mass is in, the lot failed diameter. Do not “pass on average.”
Worked RFQ: 20 kg bumper plate weights, target 450 mm OD, Olympic insert, color chart attached. Ask the factory for OD in mm, mass band, and a sleeve-fit photo on a 50 mm collar. If they only reply “standard bumper,” they have not quoted your sheet. A thinner training bumper can still be sold honestly if the OD is written. The fail is a 450 mm line with no measurement.
Stack height matters when the gym loads many plates per side. If thickness is unstated, a full stack may not accept the collar. Ask for thickness on the heaviest two ratings if the order is a commercial bumper plate weight set, not a single pair of change plates.
What this page does not certify
This is not a drop-from-height rating, not a durometer certificate, and not a noise test. Those need their own methods if you require them. Carton marks and loading photos are packing, not geometry.
FAQ
Must every bumper be 450 mm?
No. Write the OD you need. If you need 450 mm, write 450 mm and the allowed band in mm.
Can we judge diameter by eye next to a calibrated plate?
A side-by-side photo is a screen, not a measurement. Use a tape or caliper and keep the reading.
Insert fits the sample bar but not the gym bars.
Sleeve OD varies. Send the gym’s bar sleeve measurement with the RFQ, or send a sleeve sample.
Do color bumpers need a mass check if diameter passes?
Yes. Diameter does not prove bumper plate weight.
Conclusion
Verify OD, insert fit, and rated mass as three checks, then keep the photos with the PI. Send the rating and diameter list through the quote page so the factory quotes both fields, not a single “bumper” line.
Need diameter and mass on the same bumper PI?
Send OD, ratings, and sleeve size. Yunlingyu will confirm both checks before bulk.
