What pair matching means
Dumbbell pair matching is the rule that two bells of the same rating, sold as a pair, may not differ from each other by more than a stated mass. It is tighter than “each bell is inside a wide percent of the mark.” Gyms load one in each hand. They feel a mismatch long before they read a spec sheet.
On coated hex lines such as vinyl hex dumbbells, color makes the pair obvious on a dumbbell set rack. A light left and a heavy right of the same color is a visible claim, not a hidden one.
Why a wide single-piece band still fails in the gym
If each 20 kg bell may sit plus or minus 2 percent, one bell can be 19.6 kg and the other 20.4 kg. Both “pass.” The pair does not. Returns follow: the member says the set is uneven, the gym files a complaint, and the importer argues about percent. The argument was avoidable if the PI had a pair delta.

You can keep a moderate single-piece band and a tighter pair delta. That is often cheaper than shrinking percent on every bell. It does require a scale at packing, not only at final audit.
How to match and check a set
- Define the pair: same rating, same color, same construction. Photograph both end marks.
- Weigh A and B on the same scale, dry. Record both readings and the difference.
- If the delta exceeds the PI, do not average. Pull another bell and rebuild the pair, or reject.
- On a 5-50 set, sample the lightest, a mid rating, and the heaviest. Do not let a 5 lb pair represent 50 lb.
- Keep pairs together in the carton (bag, strap, or divider). A dumbbell set rack at destination will show splits immediately.
- Write the pair-delta method on the AQL sheet so bulk uses the same arithmetic as the sample.
If the factory cannot match at packing, do not print a tight delta. Buy a looser rule and tell the gym the bells are sold as singles. Honesty costs less than a return container.

Write a number the factory can hit on their packing scale. Ask them to state the scale resolution first. A delta smaller than the scale step is not inspectable.
Can we match by feel?
No. Feel is not an AQL method. Use the scale and keep the photo.

Does racking at origin prove matching?
