What handle weld inspection means

Kettlebell handle weld inspection is a check of the joint where the handle meets the bell, including fusion, grind, and any crack or movement under hand load. Commercial gym buyers ask for it because a handle that loosens or cracks is a drop hazard, while a scuffed coating is usually a packing or floor issue.

Not every kettlebell uses the same joint. Cast bells may be one-piece or welded at the horns. Filled cement or PE shells on lines such as colorful cement kettlebells use a different handle attachment than a competition shell. Write the construction on the PI before you argue about weld cosmetics.

Coating hides the joint

Paint, vinyl, and rubber jackets hide undercut, porosity, and incomplete fusion. A lifestyle photo of a colored bell does not show whether the handle is welded, bolted, or molded into a filled shell. Buyers then treat a rubber-coated kettlebell scuff as a “weld fail” or, worse, accept a cracked horn because the coating still looks even.

Ask the factory to state construction (cement/PE filled, cast iron, or competition-style) and weld finish (ground flush or as-welded). If those two fields are missing, you are inspecting a picture, not a joint.

Construction types buyers mix up

Ask the factory to state typical handle diameter, horn radius, and weld finish on the drawing. Do not copy a competition spec onto a filled cement SKU.

Competition kettlebells are a geometry and finish family. They are not automatically a certified weld procedure. If you need a named test, write the test on the RFQ.

Inspection steps gym buyers can run

  1. Confirm SKU construction from the PI, not from color. Photograph the handle-to-bell junction from both sides and from under the horn.
  2. Visual: look for a continuous fusion line or the insert the factory named. On coated bells, look for coating cracks that follow the joint (those can mark a structural problem). Isolated scuffs on the rubber body are packing marks unless they expose a split in the shell.
  3. Grind check: if the PI says ground flush, run a gloved finger around the inner horn. A remaining sharp bead is a miss against that PI, not against a different SKU.
  4. As-welded check: if the PI says as-welded, do not fail a uniform bead for not being competition-flat. Fail undercut, holes, or a bead that stops short of the drawing.
  5. Hand load: hold the bell, apply firm pull and twist on the handle. Any rock or click at the joint is a fail.
  6. Tap: tap the horn junction with a plastic mallet and listen against the approved sample. A rattle is a fail; a scuff sound from the coating is not.
  7. Record photos, construction, grind/as-welded result, and pass/fail. Copy the same photos onto the bulk AQL instruction.

Photos to require: both horns, inner grind, underside of the joint, and one uncoated or cut sample if the jacket hides everything. Ask the factory to state whether bulk will match that cut sample.

Worked PO: a gym orders a filled color ladder plus a few competition kettlebells for a platform. Do not copy the competition grind note onto the filled SKU. Inspect the filled bells for handle movement and shell split at the horn. Inspect the competition bells against the stated grind and geometry. If a rubber kettlebell in the same container shows body scuffs only, keep that claim in packing, not in the weld folder.

Incoming cartons: photograph the carton mark, then both horns before you rack the bell. A handle that already rocks in the carton is a reject even if the coating still looks even. Keep as-found photos; wiping paint dust off a crack before the picture hides the evidence you need for root cause.

What this check is not for

This inspection is not a drop-from-height proof for competition platforms. It is not a rubber smell or color-match audit. It does not replace weight tolerance checks. A rubber kettlebell with a scuffed jacket and a solid joint is a packing conversation, not an automatic structural reject. This method is not for kettlebells that the PI says are one-piece cast with no weld—inspect casting integrity at the horn instead of inventing a weld spec.

FAQ

Must commercial gyms order competition-style bells for the weld to be safe?

No. Safety is the joint as written on the PI plus inspection. Competition geometry is a training-standard choice. A filled bell can be acceptable for general gym floors if the handle does not move and the shell does not split.

Is a ground weld always better than as-welded?

Grind is a finish. Over-grind can thin the throat. Ask the factory to state grind or as-welded and inspect against that, not against a preference photo.

Coating crack at the horn—reject?

Photograph it, then check for handle movement and a split in the metal or shell. Coating-only cracks can be a process miss; a crack that opens under twist is a structural fail.

Can we name a weld certification on the PO?

Only if you specify the test and the factory agrees. Do not invent a certificate title. Method on the PI, photos, and AQL are the default export language.

Sample is ground flush and bulk is as-welded. Pass?

No. That is a finish change. Hold the lot, compare photos to the approved sample, and ask whether grind was skipped after the golden piece. Do not “accept as-welded” on the warehouse floor unless you revise the PI first.
