What center-hole QC means

Cast iron plate center-hole QC is a check that the opening and hub will slide onto the intended barbell sleeve, sit flat, and leave a clean inner edge that does not gouge chrome or jam a collar. Importers inspect it because a plate that will not load, or that rattles like a 1-inch disc on a 50 mm sleeve, is a receiving fail before anyone argues about paint.

Yunlingyu’s iron export mix for commercial rooms is usually Olympic-hole cast iron weight plates. Standard 1-inch holes still appear in home kits. The hole in millimeters belongs on every line of the PI.

Painted faces hide the insert

Black paint and a thick hub hide whether the insert is Olympic or standard. A photo labeled “gym plates” does not show a caliper on the hole. Buyers then mix weight plates 2 inch Olympic discs with 1-inch home plates in one carton mark, and the first gym bar will not take half the set.

Ask the factory to state hole size in millimeters (typical Olympic about 50.4 mm / 2 inch; typical standard about 25 mm / 1 inch). Do not accept “Olympic look” as a hole spec.

Olympic 2-inch vs standard 1-inch

Ask the factory to state hole diameter range and hub thickness on the drawing. Typical commercial Olympic iron uses a 2-inch class hole; do not invent a tolerance percentage.

Weight plates barbell programs fail at receiving when hole and bar are not the same family. Dual kg/lb marks do not mean dual holes.

Go/no-go, hub, and burr steps

  1. Confirm SKU hole in millimeters from the PI. Photograph the hole with a scale or caliper in the frame, plus the hub face.
  2. Go: slide the plate onto the agreed Olympic sleeve (or the 1-inch bar if that is the SKU). It should pass by hand. No-go: if you keep a slightly oversized gauge, the plate must not fall onto that gauge if the factory stated a maximum. If you have no gauge, use the actual bar plus the approved sample as the standard.
  3. Seat: the plate should sit against the inner sleeve face without rocking on a casting lump. Rock that you can see against the sample is a fail.
  4. Hub: compare hub thickness and flatness to the sample. A dished plate will stack poorly. Ask the factory to state hub thickness if it is missing from the drawing.
  5. Burrs: run a gloved finger around the inner hole. Sharp flash, sand inclusions, or a paint curtain that narrows the hole is a fail. Deburr is a process step, not a customer repair.
  6. Collar: fit the 50 mm collar after one plate. If the hub or burr stops the collar, it is a hole/hub fail, not a collar fail.
  7. Record hole photos, bar used as go/no-go, hub notes, and pass/fail. Copy onto bulk AQL by weight, because light and heavy castings can shrink differently.

Photos to require: caliper on the hole, plate on the sleeve, inner-edge close-up, and hub stack of two plates. Ask the factory to state whether inserts are machined after coating.

What this check is not for

This inspection does not prove rated weight, rubber diameter, or bumper drop performance. It is not a metallurgy certificate. It does not make a 1-inch plate into an Olympic plate. Do not use a 2-inch adapter sleeve as your wholesale QC tool for mixed catalogs—order the hole that matches the bar. Cast iron chips on the face are a paint/packing issue unless they change the hole.

FAQ

Can we pass plates that need a mallet on the sleeve?

No for commercial receiving. A plate that needs a hammer will not load in a busy gym and will scar the sleeve. Reject and ask for hole machining or insert size as stated on the PI.

How much slop is allowed on weight plates 2 inch holes?

Ask the factory to state the mm range and keep a sample. A little clearance is normal so the plate slides. Slop that lets the plate tilt hard on the sleeve versus sample is a fail.

Hub thicker than sample—accept?

Only if the PI allows it and collars still lock with your typical plate count. A thicker hub can block loading. Photograph the stack.

Do we need a named hole certification?

Default language is hole in millimeters, go/no-go on the named bar, and AQL. Do not invent a certification title. If a buyer standard requires a gauge, write the gauge on the RFQ.
